And, the anxiety will continue till the winner lifts the trophy. But, if you aren’t a football fan and do not want to get into a discourse on kicks and goals, fret not, we have you covered. To save you from boredom and make your Sunday awesome, here are five movies and five web series that will keep you entertained throughout the day – there’s action, comedy, adventure, and even a few scares…
The movie, starring Lily James as author Juliet Ashton, is set in the 1940s, after the Second World War. Juliet travels to the island of Guernsey, after the Second World War has ended, to learn more about The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which was formed by the residents of the island during the War. She first learns about the Society through a series of letters she exchanges with an islander named Dawsey Adams. The intriguing stories inspire her to write a book about the Society. Once in Guernsey, she learns more about their life during and after the War, which has an immense impact on her. Some of the stories tug at your heartstrings as you meet the islanders through the protagonist. As she forms bonds on the island, Juliet’s life takes a drastic change. This endearing tale is based on the book of the same name.
This 90-esque masala entertainer makes for a perfect Sunday watch when all you want to do is chill and not watch the FIFA World Cup final. The movie features Bollywood stars Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Kiara Advani, and Renuka Shahane, among several others, and is a laugh-riot. The comedy-thriller revolves around Govinda Waghmare (Vicky), who is married to Gauri (Bhumi), and also has a girlfriend, Suku (Kiara). Govinda, a struggling choreographer, is enmeshed between the two women with diametrically opposite personalities. Gauri leaves no chance to insult him and Suku is irrevocably in love with him. While he struggles to bring semblance to his life and achieve success, an unexpected twist turns Govinda’s life upside down. The thrill begins when he becomes a suspect in a murder case. Watch Govinda struggle to prove his innocence with a comedy of errors making the movie a laugh-riot.
Starring Sunny Deol, Pooja Bhatt, Dulquer Salmaan, and Shreya Dhawanthary, this crime thriller revolves around IG Arvind Mathur (Sunny), head of Mumbai’s crime branch, trying to find a psychopath who is murdering film critics. He is aided in his mission by criminal psychologist Dr. Zenobia Shroff (Pooja), who asks Arvind to direct his attention to the film industry. She feels the murderer has some connection with showbiz. The fast-paced web series will keep you hooked as you anxiously wait for the police to nab the culprit before s/he strikes again.
Imagine this: You are peacefully laying in bed, waiting for sleep to kick in. The moonlight illuminates a part of your room and a sudden cloud cover plunges it into darkness. With droopy eyes, you look around and see a ghostly figure lurking in the room. Scared, you switch on the light, but there’s no one around. You switch off the light and see the scary figure again; switch it on, and it disappears! This carefully executed movie, which is based on a short film of the same name, gives you more than just a few chills. It shows a young woman, Rebecca, and her step-brother, Martin, fighting a malevolent, vengeful spirit, who is mysteriously attached to their mother. Throughout the film, the spirit only appears in the darkness and disappears when there’s light. This hair-raising movie will make you wary of switching off the lights in the room.
This superhero film features Dywane Johnson in the titular role and is a spin-off of Shazam. Black Adam (Dwayne) rises from the dead, 5000 years after he was buried in a tomb. He is all set to unleash havoc on earth and make use of the power that he was blessed with by the Egyptians Gods before he was sent to the afterlife. This action-adventure film is a treat for DC fans and Dwayne perfectly fits in the cinematic world and impresses with her performance.
The series is set in Gotham and takes us through the formative years of the young Bruce Wayne and detective James Gordon’s early career days. In several Batman movies, James Gordon is often relegated to the sidelines – except in Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. The series puts James under the spotlight as he battles against popular villains like the Joker, Penguin, Poison IVY, and several others while trying to save Gotham from falling apart. It also shows the almost fatherly bond he shares with the young Bruce Wayne following the murder of the latter’s parents. This gritty crime thriller also shows how no one is truly a hero or a villain, as most of the ‘good’ characters have grey shades. Whether you are a fan of Batman or not, the series is a must-watch for awesome performances and a captivating plotline.
Based on the American anthology, Modern Love, this Indian version shows love in different forms. Each intriguing tale provides an insight into varied sides of love such as sexual, platonic, parental, romantic, and so on. The six narratives, though telling different stories, are tied through the universal emotion of love. The cast includes names like Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pratik Gandhi, Chitrangada Singh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sarika, Tanuja, Tanvi Azmi, and Tannishtha Chatterjee, among a host of others. The performances and short stories will keep you hooked, and the best part is you can finish it in less than a day.
The series was one of the earlier offerings and gems from AltBalaji’s vault before it decided to change tact on its content. Starring the dynamic Rajeev Khandelwal and the fabulous Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya, the series talks about infidelity, lost love, redemption, and second chances. The narrative revolves around exes Nitya (Divyanka), a single mother and head chef at her friend’s restaurant, and Vikram, a Michelin two-star chef. Nitya and Vikram were once college sweethearts, happily married and living in their small world until Vikram cheats on Nitya. Years later, the two cross paths again, when they are forced to work together. As their worlds collide, the duo is pushed to make some life-altering decisions.
Gear up for a thrilling ride as Suniel Shetty and Vivek Oberoi take you on a journey through the underbelly of one of Mumbai’s biggest slums – Dharavi. Thalaivan (Suniel), a gangster, has a strong hold on Dharavi and is a support system for several politicians. For political gains, the chief minister brings in ACP Jayant Gavaskar to kill Thalaivan. For Jayant, the mission is also a personal one as Thalaivan is the man behind his child’s death. When the police force and the Thalaivan gang clash, its bloodbath is all around with the two men at the centre.
Cinephiles will remember Jean Claude Van Damme as the 90s action star who cemented his place in Hollywood with his signature action style. This shows Jean Claude as a retired movie star harboring a secret that will shock his fans. Jean Claude, in this fictional tale, plays Jean Claude Van Johnson, a secret agent who has been hiding his real identity behind that of an actor. The series is fun, entertaining, and high on action with Jean Clause proving that he is OG when it comes to performing stunts of all kinds.
