A delegation of US parliamentarians arrived this Sunday (08.14.2022) by surprise in Taipei (Taiwan), for a two-day visit during which they will meet with the president Tsai Ing-wenin the second appearance of high-level United States authorities on the island, amid ongoing military tensions with China, which considers Taiwan a rebellious province.
The de facto US embassy in Taipei said the delegation is led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who is accompanied by four other lawmakers on what has been described as a multi-stop trip to the Indo-Pacific region. The other congressmen are Republican Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen, and Democrats John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal and Don Beyer.
The Taiwanese presidential office confirmed that the meeting with Tsai will take place on Monday morning. “Especially at times when China increases tensions in the Taiwan Strait with military exercises, the visit to Taiwan of the delegation led by Markey demonstrates once again the strong support of the United States Congress with the country, “said the president in a statement.

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry released a photo of the group at Songshan airport, after landing on a US Air Force transport plane. The delegation is expected to discuss regional security, trade, investment and relations between the island and the United States with local authorities. The trip comes just 12 days after Nancy Pelosi’s visit, which sparked so much anger in Beijing.
China raised military tensions, even threatening to shoot down Pelosi’s plane. Finally, it carried out exercises with live fire and simulated an invasion that, in practice, isolated Taiwan by sea and air. Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of its territory, and has said on numerous occasions that it hopes to take control, even if only by force.
