The secret to a glowing complexion doesn’t come in a bottle, it simply eliminates bad-for-skin foods from your diet. Some are obvious, but you may be surprised at some of the “healthy” products that are actually bad for your skin. Robynne Chutkan, MDa gastroenterologist, founder of the Digestive Center for Women, and author of Gutbliss: A 10-Day Plan to Ban Bloat, Flush Toxins, and Dump Your Digestive Baggagereveals: “When I work with people on their diet, whether it’s cutting back on dairy, or changing their diet from starches high in processed sugar to a style more plant-based diet, their skin often cleanses.” Cut these bad-for-skin foods out of your diet, and before you know it, you’ll be naturally glowing!

1. Sweets

This one is obvious. Sugar tastes great, but it’s bad for you in many different ways. It causes your blood sugar to rise, which triggers your body to produce insulin, which can cause general inflammation, interfere with collagen production, and can even cause acne.

2. Milk does not help the skin

Studies have found that dairy products may contribute to acne and rosacea. Skim milk is the worst and yogurt is the least bad.

3. Rice cakes are among the foods on this list.

Who knew that those delicious rice cakes are bad for your skin? This former staple, in fact, has a high glycemic index. When your blood sugar gets too high, wrinkles are next.

4. Potatoes

Potatoes affect you in a few ways. They are loaded with refined carbohydrates that can cause wrinkles, and possibly adult acne. They also tend to be very salty, which dehydrates you.

5. Chocolates are not very nice with the skin

This one does not include dark chocolate, so you can enjoy it. However, chocolate milk, or anything with more sugar than pure cocoa, is definitely bad for your skin.

6. Cooked meat

Meat cooked at high temperatures produces PGA, which are terrible for your skin. You don’t have to become a vegetarian, but it’s a good idea to limit your meat intake.

7. Alcohol is not good for the skin

All you need to do is look in the mirror after one of those nights to see what alcohol does. Among other things, it dehydrates you and leads to wrinkles.

8. Coffee

Coffee is not so direct when it comes to your skin. It has been said to activate acne and rosacea. It’s also a diuretic, so it can lead to a dry, pale complexion. On the other hand, a new study of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – AARPfound that drinking three or more cups of coffee a day could help prevent melanoma.

9. Fried foods

Fried foods are soaked in oil and, like meat, may contain AGEs.

10. Processed or packaged food

It is possible to get high-quality packaged food, but read the labels carefully! Processed foods contain chemicals that are not good for any part of your body.

11. Salt

If bloating is your problem, salt could be the reason. It causes you to retain water and wake up with those adorable bags under your eyes.

12. Seafood

Shellfish isn’t a bad food for everyone, but since some people are allergic to it, it can cause breakouts for those who are sensitive to it.

13. Agave

You probably thought of agave as a healthy alternative to sugar, but it’s high in fructose, which goes straight to your hips as well as causing wrinkles.

14. Margarine

As a rule, high-fat foods help prevent wrinkles, but margarine contains trans fats, which we know are terrible for you in many ways, including your complexion.

15. Juice and soda

The juice contains all the fructose from the whole fruit and zero fiber from it. Soda either has lots of sugar or artificial sweetener, which can cause inflammation.
