“Oh, by the way,” said deGrasse Tyson, “did you know that ET was a sentient plant, not an animal?” “ET’s a plant?” Colbert replied. “Turn on the light of your heart. He has a heart.” “Well, right,” replied DeGrasse Tyson, “so he gave it a heart so you can relate to it. But it was a plant.”
According to deGrasse Tyson, he was given this information by a fairly reliable source.
“How do you know it’s a plant?” Colbert asked. “Do you remember that ET would touch the plants and they would grow back?” DeGrasse Tyson asked. “It’s not an accident.” When asked how he knew, deGrasse Tyson replied, “ Told me in my office.”
The audience didn’t know what to think.
The first conversation E.T. had about it was a long and animated rant by deGrasse Tyson about the possibility of aliens, which are, in fact, sentient plants, and what they might think if they did end up being consumed by humans on Earth. Saw the vegetation. This left Colbert with just one question.
“To come up with that idea of sensory plants,” said Colbert, “did you smoke any baby plants?”
