For starters, she made a lot of money before she even turned 18.
When I think back to favorite childhood stars,

Hilary Duff is one of the first to come to mind, and I don’t think I’m alone in this. Not only did Hilary define the early 2000s ~lewks~ while starring in Lizzie McGuire—I mean, she invented the art of layering patterns—but she also gave us quality entertainment. (Hi, Cadet Kelly and A Cinderella Story.)
And thanks to Hilary’s extensive work in film and television, she’s made, like, a lot of money. Her bank account only grew, though, when she eventually dropped a clothing line and started collaborating with designers on other ventures. Obviously, Hilary, 35, is still super successful today, and she’s now starring in How I Met Your Father, which dropped it’s second season on Netflix this week.
Ahead, find out exactly how much Hilary has raked in over the years, from Lizzie McGuire, to her music career, and real estate investments—and just how much she’s worth today.
Hilary grew up singing, acting, and dancing. Her fam moved from Houston, Texas to Los Angeles in 1993 to help Hilary get more auditions and be closer to ~the scene~, per Celebrity Net Worth. In 1997, Hilary landed her first uncredited role as an extra in the television miniseries, True Women, according to IMDb.
But it wasn’t until 2001 that she landed her breakout role in Lizzie McGuire, per IMDb. From there, she took on the titular role in Disney’s Cadet Kelly, starred as Lorraine Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen, and Sam in A Cinderella Story. As if that wasn’t enough, Hilary even launched a music career around that same time.
Between 2001 and 2004, Hilary was in 65 episodes of Lizzie McGuire, and played both Lizzie and Isabella in The Lizzie McGuire Movie which was…iconic. (BTW, the show made Disney $100 million from merch sales alone when it originally aired in 2003, per Celebrity Net Worth.
Hilary reportedly made $15,000 per episode of Lizzie McGuire, per IMDb, which adds up to $975,000 for all the episodes, and she went on to earn $1 million for the film.
And, of course, rest in peace to the Lizzie McGuire reboot, which was cancelled after Hilary and production disagreed on their ideas about adult Lizzie’s life. “She had to be 30 years old doing 30-year-old things,” Hilary told WH in 2022. “She didn’t need to be doing bong rips and having one-night stands all the time, but it had to be authentic. I think they got spooked.”
Co-starring in Agent Cody Banks made her $500,000, while Cheaper by the Dozen and its sequel made her $1 million and $2 million, respectively, IMDb wrote. In between, she earned $2.2 million for A Cinderella Story, $2 million for Raise Your Voice, $2 million for The Perfect Man, and $2 million for Material Girls. She also had smaller and guest roles in shows such as Gossip Girl, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Community, plus movies such as War, Inc., and According to Greta, per IMDb.
Between 2003 and 2013—the decade that some people might call the "good old days"—Hilary made at least $18 million from her different salaries, plus royalties and bonuses, Celebrity Net Worth reported.
“Why Not” will forever live rent-free in my head. While her debut album sold over 5 million albums alone, Hilary would go on to sella total of 15 million albums worldwide, per Celebrity Net Worth. She even has three RIAA-Certified Platinum Albums and three No. 1 hit singles.
Of course, there was Hilary’s clothing line, which was truly the epitome of early aughts style. Stuff by Hilary Duff was founded in 2004, per The Los Angeles Times. Additionally, Hilary dropped a perfume collab with Elizabeth Arden in 2006, according to The New York Times, a jeans line collab with DKNY called Femme for DKNY in 2020, per PEOPLE, and another collab with Smash + Tess in 2021, per Vogue.
And did you know she’s also an author?! Yup, Hilary wrote the Elixir trilogy between 2011 and 2014. Just leaving this here, in case you’re as curious as I am…
Even though the Lizzie McGuire reboot was cancelled, it freed up her schedule room for another show: the spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, aptly named, How I Met Your Father. And let’s just say, she liked her character, Sophie, way more in the spinoff. “It would be dumb of me to not know that I have a sweet spot playing that relatable girl,” she told WH. “I am that girl.”
Hilary’s salary for HIMYF isn’t publicly disclosed, but back when the O.G. version graced everyone’s televisions, Neil Patrick Harris made $400,000 per episode playing Barney Stinson, Forbes reported. So, even though there are only two seasons of HIMYF right now, it’s possible that Hilary could be making a salary in that ballpark.
Back in 2004, at just 17, Hilary bought her first house in the Toluca Lake neighborhood for $3.5 million, Forbes wrote. She eventually sold it for just under $6.25 million in 2012, per The Los Angeles Times. That means she probably made around $2.75 million from the sale.
As of September 2020, Hilary has been living in her Beverly Hills home for about a decade, per Architectural Digest. She bought the home with first husband, Mike Comrie, for $3.85 million, Business Insider wrote, but Hilary now lives there with current husband Matthew Koma, according to PEOPLE.
In total, Hilary is worth $25 million today, according to Celebrity Net Worth. That’s no joke.
How I Met Your Father is streaming now on Netflix.
